Intro to Postpartum Doulas

Just as birth doulas "mother the mother" during pregnancy and labor, postpartum doulas support the new family after their baby arrives. The research is impressive, showing less postpartum depression and more confidence in parenting skills when women use postpartum doulas.

Tiny newborn people are incredibly sweet, but their arrival can also turn a family's world a little topsy turvy. Imagine an experienced mentor in your home who can reassure you about normal newborn behavior, and help you navigate this new territory. Postpartum doulas can ease the transition into parenthood a number of ways, including:

  • breastfeeding tips and assistance

  • guidance and time-tested tricks for newborn care

  • offering suggestions and resources on postpartum healing

  • easing stress with conversation or a shoulder rub

  • identifying signs of postpartum depression and connecting families with resources to find help

  • light housekeeping assistance, such as washing dishes, doing baby laundry or wiping counters

  • help with baby wearing, including demonstrations and loans of slings and carriers -- try before you buy!

  • cooking nutritious meals

  • helping older siblings adjust to their new role

    Kind Words:

"Terra was a huge help when our new baby came and my husband had to work long hours. She helped by occupying our older children and giving them some attention so I could rest. She was also a great resource on many things that I had questions on during those first few weeks home."

    - Nichole, mom to Dominick, Lida and Igor
